Installation Instructions for Trunk-Type Pistons (One-Piece Pistons)

Trunk-type pistons are common in 6V71 and 8V71 engines. These pistons use compression and oil control rings installed directly on the piston body.


1. Preparation


  • Clean the piston ring grooves and piston surfaces with a lint-free cloth.

  • Make sure all carbon deposits and burrs are removed.

  • Use a ring groove cleaner or a broken piston ring to scrape the grooves.

  • Ensure correct piston-to-cylinder and ring-to-groove clearances per spec.


2. Ring Orientation


  • Determine the correct orientation from the ring markings:

    • "Top" marking faces the top of the piston.

    • For rings with a tapered face, the narrow edge always faces upward.

  • Oil control rings may come in multiple parts (rail and expander); follow the manufacturer's assembly layout.


3. Installing the Rings


  • Use a proper ring expander tool. Never spread the ring ends apart more than necessary.

  • Install oil rings first, followed by compression rings, working from the bottom groove up.

  • Rotate each ring until its end gap is aligned at a different position than the one below it, typically spaced 120° apart.


4. End Gap Staggering


  • Do not align ring end gaps. A common spacing recommendation:

    • Top ring: 10 o’clock

    • Second ring: 4 o’clock

    • Oil ring rails: 2 o’clock and 8 o’clock

  • This reduces blow-by and oil consumption.


5. Final Inspection


  • Ensure each ring rotates freely in its groove (except oil expanders).

  • Measure ring side clearance with a feeler gauge.

  • Insert piston into the cylinder using a ring compressor. Do not force or hammer the piston.


Installation Instructions for Crosshead-Type Pistons (Two-Piece Pistons)

Crosshead pistons are used in later 71 series marine and heavy-duty configurations like the 16V71TI. These pistons consist of an upper crown and a lower skirt connected by a wrist pin. Rings are installed on the crown portion.


1. Preparation


  • Separate the piston crown from the skirt if not already done.

  • Thoroughly clean ring grooves and check for damage or wear.

  • Verify the ring groove width and depth for correct ring fit.


2. Ring Identification and Orientation


  • The ring set typically includes:


    • Multiple compression rings (often 3) with bevels or steps.

    • One or more oil control rings, sometimes using a slotted cast ring or multiple segments.

  • Bevels and step cuts must face up toward the combustion chamber.

  • Always follow the service manual’s diagram or match old ring configuration if available.


3. Installing the Rings


  • Use a ring expander and avoid twisting rings onto the piston crown.

  • Start with the oil control ring, then proceed upward.

  • On some crosshead pistons, back-up rings or spacers may be used in the oil groove.


4. Ring End Gap Positioning


  • Stagger all ring end gaps. Common pattern:

    • Top compression ring: 12 o’clock

    • Second compression ring: 6 o’clock

    • Third compression ring: 9 o’clock

    • Oil ring segments: 3 o’clock and 7 o’clock

  • Avoid placing gaps near the piston pin axis.


5. Inspection and Fit


  • Ensure all rings can move freely in their grooves.

  • Measure axial clearance (side clearance) and ring-to-bore end gap.

  • Assemble the piston crown to the skirt using the proper wrist pin and retainers.

  • Use a ring compressor to install the piston into the liner, being cautious not to damage the ring lands.


Additional Notes for Both Piston Types


  • Do not reuse old piston rings. Always install new rings during a rebuild.

  • Check end gap by inserting the ring into the cylinder bore and measuring with a feeler gauge. Consult the manual for correct specs.

  • Lubricate the piston and rings with clean engine oil before installation.

  • Use a ring compressor and ensure rings are compressed evenly during insertion.

  • Avoid hammering or forcing the piston during installation—use smooth, even pressure.
